About the Defence Vetting Agency

The Defence Vetting Agency (DVA), based in York, is an Executive Agency of the Ministry of Defence. The DVA is a modern customer focussed delivery organisation responsible for performing national security checks. This is critical work, allowing the business of defence to continue by providing assurance that those in the Armed Services, Civil Service, other government departments as well as those working in the defence industry, have the necessary clearances to do their jobs.

Carrying out around 140,000 checks a year to deliver the Defence Vetting Programme, the DVA performs its functions to rigorous professional standards thus making an important contribution to developing the UK’s defence capability.

The DVA was formed in 1997, and has been at its York HQ since 2000. It has achieved much since its formation but is not in the business of standing still. It has created a modern IS system to provide a more responsive service to its customers and has ambitious delivery targets to further exceed customer expectations. The DVA now wants to build on its success to become a byword for quality and efficiency. The Agency is pioneering the use of e-vetting which offers the prospect not just of improving the service it provides but of expanding that service and customer base across government in line with the Cabinet Office Shared Services agenda.

The DVA employs about 350 staff and has an annual operating budget of £10m. 200 staff are based at the York HQ, in addition there are about 115 home-based Vetting Officers spread across the UK with small numbers in Germany and Cyprus.

The roles now advertised are key senior positions within the organisation. The success of the agency in meeting its customers’ expectations and moving forward to meet the challenges of the future will be very much decided by your contribution. The world of Defence is always challenging and stimulating and with the importance of the DVA to national security you will feel that you are making a real contribution. Few management positions offer the kind of remit and responsibility we have to offer.
